Your Baby's Health

  • Cloth nappies do not cause nappy rash. It is caused by the combination of urine and faeces in contact with the skin for prolonged periods and not the type of nappy worn.
  • Babies in disposable nappies are not changed as frequently as they should be therefore there is more stale urine for the bacteria of the faeces to form ammonia which burns the baby's skin causing nappy rash. Because disposable nappies have chemicals for holding a lot more urine (and also because of their expense) many parents leave them on longer than sensible.
  • A disposable nappy hides the evidence the nappy needs changing often resulting in bacteria causing rashes.
  • Always ensure the whole nappy area is cleansed thoroughly with a damp warm cloth. Disposable baby wipes contain a lot of perfumes among other chemicals which can irritate the skin.
  • Babies do not poo in their sleep, therefore, a cloth nappy overnight - although wet - will not cause nappy rash, provided it is changed as soon as they wake. An overnight cloth nappy doubled up (2 nappies or by using a booster) is quite sufficient with a good quality nappy cover. A well-padded nappy will easily last 12 hours. A one-way liner will keep moisture from baby's skin.
  • A heavy wetting baby does not need disposables, just a booster (or more padding) for extra absorbency, and more frequent changes.
  • There are biodegradable and washable nappy liners available. This makes soiling easy to remove and has a minimal effect on the environment. Flushable liners are quite safe in septic tanks - just as using the toilet yourself.
  • Liners can be used inside a cloth nappy to keep baby feeling dry and to allow solid waste to simply be peeled away and flushed down the loo.
